Liberal leadership ‘settled’, Nationals ‘hotly contested’

Peter Dutton is expected to be elected Liberal leader on Monday “unopposed” but the Nationals face a “hotly contested ballot,” Sky News Political Editor Andrew Clennell says.

“What direction Dutton takes will be interesting as he is a conservative,” he said.

“Discussions with colleagues this week has shown he might go for the centre and not go hard-right in terms of his approach in a bid to win Liberal followers back.

“While the Liberals leadership position is settled with Josh Frydenberg out of the way, I am expecting a hotly contested ballot of the Nationals leadership.

“Barnaby Joyce is set to be challenged by David Littleproud, his deputy, and Darren Chester.”
