Trans Tasman bubble is ‘rubbish’ and ‘worse than nothing’

about 3 years in news

The new Trans-Tasman travel bubble announced by NZ PM Jacinda Ardern is "rubbish" and "worse than nothing", according to the IPA's Policy Director Gideon Rozner.

“As far as I understand, it’ll go a little something like this: you can book a holiday to New Zealand, you can pay for a holiday to New Zealand – but if there’s one or two cases in Auckland and Jacinda Ardern decides to shut down half the country again, good luck getting there," he said

“Now if you land in New Zealand and there’s an outbreak back at home – well as we all know you’ll have trouble getting home as well.

“If you’re in the air and there’s an outbreak back where you’ve come from then as soon as you land it’s off to mandatory detention – sorry hotel quarantine – for you.

“Even if the planets align and you finally get your holiday to New Zealand the best you can hope for is paying through the nose for a heavily inflated airfare to sit in seat 27F in Air New Zealand economy for hours on end wearing this… dehumanising undignified face nappy.”
