Man, dog shot dead, woman burned, house gutted in Cocorite

An 82-year-old woman is in a stable but serious condition after she suffered burns to her arms and back as she tried to save her 92-year-old husband from their burning Cocorite house.
The woman, Eldena Lewis, pulled her husband George out of the house after gunmen stormed in, shot George Lewis and one of their dogs and set their house on fire.
Newsday was told the incident happened around 4.45 am on Monday. Gunshots were heard on Palm Lane, off Harding Place in Cocorite and shortly after, the house was ablaze.
Lewis grabbed her husband, but could only drag him so far. A neighbour helped her get over the fence around their property and took her to safety. They also tried to save her husband, but the fire was too intense.

Lewis was taken to the St James Medical Complex.
When George Lewis's body was recovered police saw a wound at the side of his head which they believe was caused by a gunshot.
An autopsy is expected to be done at the Forensic Science Centre in St James.
Relatives of the couple are still trying to understand who would want to kill them and why.
They told Newsday the deceased Lewis was affectionately called “Nash,” after US singer Johnny Nash, who sang I Can See Clearly Now, and his wife was well known in the area and was a deacon in the nearby Mt Calvary Holy Church.
“Everyone could attest to the kind of people they are. They would take people in and carry them on outings. They were generally nice people,” said a resident. “He was a cool, collected, calm person who didn’t say much. She was the more outgoing one. She was recognised in the area because she was a deacon in the church. She would share food for people.”

Police are working on the theory that gunmen killed Lewis while searching for a younger male relative who they believe was behind the murder of Akeil “Smeagol” Andrews, who was shot dead in Cocorite over the weekend.
