Dozens of ‘strong nations’ criticise China at UN meeting

Sky News host Chris Kenny says the fact China's new draconian security laws at a UN Human Rights Council meeting received more support than dissent, has proven why the "US was right to withdraw from this body two years ago".

This week in Geneva the United Nations Humans Rights Council conducted a vote among member states on statements of support or condemnation of China's recent actions in relation to Hong Kong.

The communist Chinese government formally passed draconian national security laws last week which criminalise acts of sedition and secession with a penalty of jail time in China.

Only 27 member countries criticised the new security laws, whereas, 53 counties nations backed the laws.

Mr Kenny said a number of the nations which supported the laws are in fact within “China’s orbit” including countries like North Korea, Iran, Syria and Yemen, among others.

“And proudly at the top of the list supporting his statement was Australia, along with a host of European democracies including Germany, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Ireland and Denmark along with New Zealand, Canada and Japan,” Mr Kenny said.

“There's quite a difference isn't there, between the sort of countries supporting China and those standing up for freedom, democracy and autonomy”.
