More ‘sovereign capability a good move’ amid military spending boost

Given the decline in United States capability in the Indo-Pacific, the increase in military spending announced by the prime minister on Wednesday will help to address potential shortfalls in the ADF, Sky News contributor Catherine McGregor says.

A $270 billion boost to the ADF will go towards the acquisition and deployment of an anti-ballistic missile shield and other defence projects as part of a 10-year plan to strengthen Australian military power in the region.

Given the major delays in procuring submarines, having the ability to “strike from the air and enhance our space capabilities is an untrammeled good in terms of securing the archipelagic approaches to Australia which is vital,” Ms McGregor said.

“Having more sovereign capability is a good move,” she told Sky News host Chris Kenny.
