The Australia’s Dennis Shanahan says the problem for the Labor Party at the moment is that it is being seen as too negative at a time of a national crisis.

Since the bushfire crisis over the Christmas period, the Labor Party has found it "very difficult to attack him" and "I think they've been seen as too negative," Mr Shanahan said.

Scott Morrison is the preferred prime minister up two points leading Opposition Leader Anthony Albanese 58 to 26 according to the latest Newspoll.

Both the Coalition and Labor’s primary vote remains steady at 42 and 35 respectively, while the Greens recorded 11 per cent and One Nation three per cent.

The prime minister’s personal approval rating is up two points to 68 while his disapproval sits at 27.

"I think that it is a remarkable number for Scott Morrison," Mr Shanahan told Sky News host Peta Credlin.

"His response to the COVID pandemic has actually lifted him back to these record levels of Kevin 07".
