Victorian Premier was ‘happy to give a nod and wink to protesters’

Victorian Opposition Leader Michael O’Brien says it is either one law for everybody or “we’re living in a hypocritical state” run by Premier Daniel Andrews who is “happy to give a nod and a wink to protesters”.

Across major Australian cities on the weekend, tens of thousands of people marched to protest against Indigenous deaths in custody which has sparked outrage over the double standards at play when it comes to coronavirus lockdown restrictions.

“I didn’t know that political protest cures coronavirus, because that’s about the only explanation you can come up” to justify tens of thousands of people protesting in Victoria’s capital on Saturday according to Mr O’Brien.

“The die was cast by then (Daniel) Andrews had already got what he wanted, he had already given this protest legitimacy”.

Mr O’Brien told Sky News host Chris Kenny, the Victorian Police went from being a body “whose primary aim was to uphold the law” to now being one “to keep the peace”.

“Unfortunately, we’re seeing that sometimes where keeping the peace is at odds with the law we see a blind eye being turned”.

“I don’t blame the police for that, I think they need political leadership”.
