Mural of Former Philadelphia Mayor Removed Amid Ongoing Anti Racism Protests

almost 4 years in news

A mural of former Philadelphia Mayor and Police Commissioner Frank Rizzo was removed from the city’s Italian Market in the early hours of June 7 amid renewed scrutiny over his treatment of black and gay communities, local media reported. The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that the action was taken as widespread anti-racism protests following the death of George Floyd renewed a local call to stop glorifying the legacy of a mayor. Italian Market officials said the 25-year-old mural would be replaced with something that “better represents the fabric” of the area.
