March 16, 2020. Deputy Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly speaks to the media in Canberra with a COVID-19 update. He says that 20 per cent of people who will contract the virus will need serious medical care, including those people in aged care, "Here in Australia we now have almost 300 cases, that has risen quiet significantly over last week or two, and unfortunately now 5 deaths, all in elderly people," Mr Kelly says. "People over the age of 60 are more susceptible," he adds. Dr Kelly predicts the virus will infect between 20 to 60 per cent of the population in the coming months with a death rate of 1 per cent. "So you can do the maths,' he says. (AAP Video/Marc Tewksbury)
